The Italian Game is one of the best openings for improving players. It leads to clear plans, quick development and open positions where good moves are rewarded. If you want a reliable answer to 1.e4 e5, start here.
The starting moves
The Italian Game begins with three natural moves:
- e4 e5 — both sides claim the center.
- Nf3 Nc6 — White attacks the e5 pawn, Black defends.
- Bc4 — the bishop eyes the f7 square, Black’s weakest point.
From here Black usually plays Bc5 (the Giuoco Piano) or Nf6 (the Two Knights Defense). Both are fine; the ideas below work against each.
The core ideas
The Italian is about fast development and pressure on f7. Keep these principles in mind:
- Develop knights before bishops, and castle early.

- Prepare the d4 break to open the center once you are developed.
